About me
I am a staff researcher (Científico Titular), head of the Advanced Computing and e-Science Group at Institute of Physics of Cantabria (IFCA), associated with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (IFCA, CSIC-UC).
Note
I am trying to stop using mass surveillance applications and services as much as I can, as this may have an impact in how you contact me. Please check this post as I will be updating the outcome of this change.
Research
Topics
- Cloud computing models, distributed systems, advanced computing (with special focus on research and science services).
- Security and data privacy.
- Data science (with focus on security, privacy, ethics and trustworthiness)
- Socially, environmentally responsible and ethical computing (especially on data-driven science, but not only).
Publications
You can find a list of my publications here or in any of my public profiles:
- Google Scholar, probably the most up to date listing.
- ORCID 0000-0002-0Y013-4602, probably the most accurate listing.
- WoS.
- DBLP.
- Profile at DIGITAL.CSIC, the CSIC institutional repository.
Editorial activities
I serve as an associate editor for the following journals:
Projects
You can check my current and past projects here. Currently I am mostly working on distributed computing (Cloud) services for science (with a focus on data science) in the context of the European Open Science Cloud.
Infrastructure
I coordinate the computing (Cloud, batch, HPC, storage) infrastructure and services that our group is operating. These resources are focused on scientific users and researchers, providing specialized compute and storage services for their needs.
Teaching
I am the responsible of the Security, privacy and legal aspects subject (UIMP, UC) of the Data Science Master from the University of Cantabria and the International University Menéndez Pelayo. You can find all the materials in Moodle. Also, I normally offer a few TFM (Trabajo de Fin de Máster).
PhD students
I am currently supervising the following PhD students:
- Aida Palacio Hoz (working towards improved Intrusion Detection Systems, IDS).
- Judith Sainz-Pardo Díaz (working on privacy aspects of data science).
- Jaime Céspedes Sisniega (working on MLOps techniques).
- Ignacio Heredia Cacha (working on resource and placement optimizations for compute services).
- Andrés Heredia Canales (working on secure platforms for data processing and DevSecOps).
Short bio
Alvaro Lopez Garcia, PhD, (ORCID 0000-0002-0Y013-4602) is a CSIC Tenured Scientist (Científico Titular) and head of the Advanced Computing and e-Science Group at the Institute of Physics of Cantabria (IFCA), associated with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (IFCA, CSIC-UC).
His research focuses on the intersection of cloud computing models, distributed systems, and advanced computing, with a particular emphasis on enhancing research and science services. His research in this area prioritizes data security and privacy, the ethical implications, trustworthiness, and privacy concerns associated with data-driven methodologies. Additionally, he advocates for socially and environmentally responsible computing practices, aiming to integrate ethical considerations into all aspects of data-driven science and beyond.
He has participated in more than 20 EU projects (FP7, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe); noteworthy being the project coordinator of the H2020 DEEP-Hybrid-DataCloud and the Horizon Europe AI4EOSC and SIESTA actions, all of them focused on delivering advanced and innovative services for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) where he is a recognized contributor.
